YKLM’s first Canadian and International Contemporary Art Auction will take place on Tuesday, November 12, and will feature local artists from the Greater Vancouver area. Among the collection, artist Anastasiia Fedorova captures the vitality of the Canadian landscape through her dynamic painting approach. The spontaneity of her plein-air explorations of the West Coast landscape is conveyed with a vibrant colour palette, thus rendering the natural environment in rich and vivid details.
Fedorova’s bold impasto technique leaves impressions of her dynamic movements, creating fluid curves of paint on the canvas. Each of her paintings carry a unique textural quality that serve to shape the subjects of her Canadian landscapes. For example, in her painting Happy House, the clouds are delicately painted in thin, long brushstrokes, reminiscent of the diaphanous quality of cirrus clouds. The painterly application of the grass however, is abundantly tapered with paint, thus conveying the notion of a dense vegetation bordering the ocean.
In her work, Pond at Olympic Village, the artist relies upon a combination of a deep, jewel-toned palette and linear structures to merge the Canadian wilderness and cityscape into one. The flora surrounding the body of water extends outwards and, in this way, indicates the tall buildings encircling the pond. Although the buildings are barely visible in the background, they cast a large reflection upon the surface of the water, providing a sense of symmetry. In this way, the traditional method of Canadian landscape painting has been interrupted, by the growing presence of urbanism. This contemporary approach in depicting the Canadian landscape acknowledges the structural similarities that develop within urbanization and the wild, allowing the viewer to transition between passive observation, to active consideration.
